BFF, Bestie, Buddy, Bae...whatever you call them, make sure you give them a special shout out today to celebrate #NationalBestFriendsDay. They're the peeps that you can laugh with, practice your ugly cry in front of, eat cake with, and stack up the life-long memories that you'll eventually share tales about starting with "Remember when...". Whether human or animal (yes, our pup bestie loves cake and he's seen our ugly cry a time or two), hug your partner in crime just a little tighter today.
Now is not the time to get into a word war on how to spell this delicious treat. Your day is better spent arguing with yourself as to which delectable fried piece of dough you'll devour. Whether you're a doughnut purist who loves the good old fashioned kind or like to live on the wild side with flavors like Canadian Bacon, Cream Cheese & Jalapeno Jelly (aka "Porkey's" courtesy of Gourdough's Big. Fat. Donuts. in Austin, Texas), enjoy National Doughnut/Donut Day as if it won't come around for another year.
We know you would send Dad on an all-expense paid vacation to Bora Bora or on an African safari if you could, but for now you're looking for a few more cost-effective options that will say "I love you man" but still leave a few dollars left over to cover a taco or two on the weekend. Never fear, Betty is here! Below are some gift ideas for under $25 that will get you started but check out our full list of potential prezzies that are all about Dad here.
Oh, and don't forget about Papa this year!
Unless you've been living under a rock (or hiding under a service panel underneath the Millennium Falcon), you've probably seen the hilarious video posted by Candace Payne showcasing "the best birthday gift to myself!". Forget going to Disneyland, Candace's car was the happiest place on earth last week. We think she'll be a solid contender for everyone's new list of "people you'd like to have dinner with".
Candace, thank you for delivering such thigh-slapping tears of joy. Ride this viral fame like Chewy riding shotgun in the Millennium Falcon!
Folks, if you missed out on getting your own Chewbacca mask before they sold out at Kohl's we were able to track down the same mask available through Hasbro on Amazon.
Picture this...it's Friday night and you're cheering on #88 while channeling Oprah screaming "You get a pizzaah!". "You get a pizzaah!". "You get a pizzaah!". Perfect Friday right? Well, it turns out that Dale Jr isn't racing until Saturday night and Oprah likely isn't going to be sharing a slice with you in your living room but you get the gist.
Have a fantastic National NASCAR and Pizza Party Day everyone. Enjoy every single blissful engine-revving, cheesy-goodness second!
Warmer weather is here (or maybe on its way?) and we thought it might be fun to pull together a quick list of items that you can grab as a treat to yourself or someone special that will leave plenty of money left over for sun-filled activities this Spring and Summer.
Initial Canvas Tote. A day at the beach, a quick run to the grocery store, or a catch-all for a full week at the office...a tote that is functional, stylish, and under US$20.
Oh, and this would be a perfect gift for a bridal party! Fill it with some goodies and you've got a sweet thank you gift they can use on the big day (to stash water, snacks, flip flops, hairspray, etc) and then use for the rest of the summer.
Hanging Glass Terrarium. We absolutely love this hanging terrarium piece. So much so that we featured it in our Mother's Day gift ideas list. It doesn't require a ton of space (lovely things do come in small packages!) and it's low maintenance...perfect for our (wanna-be) green thumbs.
Whether it's a small thank you gift for someone who has been kind or you're looking for a little pop of color in your digs year round, this is a stunning buy.
Hammock. We feel like taking a nap just looking at this!
Picture a warm sunny day, a good book, a shady tree...instant relaxation.
No need to spend a week's salary on a vacation, snap up this hammock (quick, while it's on sale!) and you'll be enjoying a stay-cation that will have your neighbors peeking over the fence with envy.
Hummingbird Feeder. Hanging from a small deck in the city or from a patio deep in the suburbs, a hummingbird feeder is a perfect addition to any outdoor space. You can hang this beauty almost anywhere, fill it with Bob's famous h'bird juice (recipe below), and just sit back to watch all of the stunning colors of the hummingbirds lining up for the buffet.
Bob's Hummingbird Juice. 4 parts water + 1 part sugar. In a saucepan, combine water and sugar and bring to a slow boil, stirring occasionally. Remove pan from heat, let cool for up to 4 hours. Pour liquid into feeder and hang outside.
Earbuds. There are so many options out there but these ones caught our eye for a few reasons.
- Price: for under US$20 (on sale!), buy another pair for your bestie as a "just because" gift.
- Built-in microphone: keep your hands free during a walk, making dinner, gardening, or any one of the other to-do's you have on your list.
- Color: we love the gold look for this summer but check out the other colors available.
Iced Tea Pitcher. Yup, it's iced tea time! Ready to whip up your favorite refreshing recipe? Whether you like to keep it OITG (original iced tea gangster) or add a little more flavor (check out the below recipe for Lemon-Blueberry Sweet Tea), stay cool this Summer with this Iced Tea Pitcher, a perfect addition to any picnic or outdoor dining occasion. Prep your tea, fill the internal cylinder with ice and enjoy!
- 1 (12-oz.) package frozen blueberries
- 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
- 3 family-size tea bags
- 3/4 cup sugar
- Garnishes: fresh blueberries, lemon rind strips
- Bring blueberries and lemon juice to a boil in a large saucepan over medium heat; cook, stirring occasionally, 5 minutes. Remove from heat; pour through a wire-mesh strainer into a bowl, using back of a spoon to squeeze out juice. Discard solids. Rinse saucepan clean.
- Bring 4 cups water to a boil in same saucepan; add 3 tea bags; let stand 5 minutes. Discard tea bags. Stir in sugar and blueberry juice mixture. Pour into a pitcher; cover and chill 1 hour. Serve over ice. Garnish, if desired.
We've dug through the closet to uncover the shorts buried deep in the back, finally found our sunglasses from last summer, and are ready to fire up the grill. With warmer weather here (or least for some of us on its way stuck in traffic!), we're spending more time outside. Just because the sun goes down doesn't mean that we have to scurry inside and hide away from the night sky. Dine alfresco this Spring and Summer under the (visual) warmth of some inexpensive and easy to install outdoor lighting.
For this price, buy two sets and double down on the twinkly ambience.
Taco Tuesday...or Wednesday (any day is a good day), tacos are always at the top of the requested menu rotation. One of our go-to moves for taco night is using a large bamboo cutting board. See, this puppy doubles as a prep station and serving board. All of the fixin's are chopped and organized on the board and then it goes straight from the counter to the dining table. Everyone likes to make their own custom creation so this allows for family-style dining and once our bellies are full, clean up is a breeze with a quick rinse and wipe down. For under US$20, this beauty will quickly become a staple in your kitchen toolkit.
As adults, we find ourselves saying a lot of things out loud that we never thought we would..."Did you just sneeze on the cheese?!" or "Please don't lick the dog's face.". Saying that I enjoy cleaning our cast iron pans is also on that list but it's true. This little gem has saved us countless hours in scrubbing.
We use our cast iron pans 3-4 times a week for everything from fried eggs for breakfast, to cookie pies for dessert. Every single time the pans have come up nice and clean and ready for the next meal. Also works a treat on grill plates for the bbq*...no more crossing fingers that you won't find a brush bristle in your burger (ouch!).
For under US$15, this is one of those kitchen tools that will pay for itself lickity split.
*we strongly advise to only do this when the bbq is NOT on (spend your evenings relaxing out back, not in the emergency room!).
All the single ladies, and the married ladies, and the I-don't-care-what-my-relationship-status-is ladies...listen up. Monday, May 9th is National Women's Check Up Day. Now we know that you know that you don't need to be reminded how important it is to take care of yourself but sometimes we get so busy with life, even a routine check up falls off the calendar. Time to push it back to the top of the list and get an appointment scheduled. You know the drill, you must place your oxygen mask securely on before you can assist the people around you.
We're thinking that the day might get more PR if it were named "National Get Your Lady Bits Checked Out Day" but we'll cross that bridge another time.
Oh, May 9th is also National Lost Sock Memorial Day so maybe buy some new socks to keep your toes cozy at your check up.
It's simple really. We've been looking for websites that provide cost-effective ideas for everything from birthday gifts to plain white socks, and everything in between. Yes, retailers curate their own segments including by price but in some cases it would take so many clicks to get to that point, we were concerned that carpel tunnel would kick in!
"The uBux" is about trying to help save a few bucks without having to spend hours online checking all of the major retail sites individually (and missing out on some cool, off-the-wall type shopping options as well). We'll also frequently include a personal story or a friendly reminder of an upcoming event or holiday to make sure you're valuable time is used to the fullest.
